  • 1. Chess

    Class Description:

    This class provides new or beginning students of chess a strong foundation in the rules and strategies needed to play the game of chess. The course is designed for students with little to no experience with chess.

    Juan Jara

    Started playing chess at 6 years old with his dad and is where he first got interested in playing.  Attended Adelante Elementary and played chess from 1st grade through 5th grade. Joined his Kennedy Middle School chess group, where he was mentored by his math teacher and to this days strived to beat his at the game. Joined an afterschool chess club in High School. Cañada College chess club member . Juan believes that chess is a great and easy way to teach kids the values of patience and evaluating their options. It is a strategic game, in which you can’t just rush into it, you must think of how to play the game. It is a great way to practice problem solving.

  • 3. Piano

    Class Description:

    This class is designed for students who wish to develop basic piano playing skills, or expand on their existing skills.  Class will be spent both on and off the keyboards.  While playing, students will be working individually and in small groups to master the techniques of playing and to learn pieces.

    B.A. Music History from San Francisco State University. M.A. Music from UCLA. Ph.D. Ethnomusicology from UCLA. Voice teacher for 13 years. Piano teacher for 6 years. Spanish teacher/ Instructor for 13 years. Various recordings and published works.

    Class Description:

    This class is designed for students who wish to develop basic guitar playing skills, or expand on their existing skills.  Students will learn the basics of playing guitar at a beginning level through studying music notation, chord symbols, and peer modeling. The main objective of this class is to create an enhanced appreciation for music through playing the guitar.

    Born in the port of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. At the age of 5 he began to play guitar in a lyrical way . At 10 years old he won the first contest of singing and interpretation called "La Trova Istmeña” . In 1992 he won first place in singing and had the opportunity to record an album with the House record label Alfa Records . 1994 he wons his third competition of singing in the city of Oaxaca. . He graduated from music school in Oaxaca, with a Bachelors in music.

  • 6. Art Workshop

    Class Description:

    This class encourages young children to explore and express themselves through art activities and to introduce young children to beginning skills, and art tools. This class will allow students to experience drawing, painting, clay, printmaking, collage, design and more.

    Lourdes Morante-Mieses

    Studied art at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills . Works of art have been in more than nine art expositions and in two individual ones . Over 10 years of experience as an art teacher for kids. She put her creative talent to work at the San Jose LM Gallery using various materials such as: charcoal, pastel, tempera, oil and acrylic, mixed metal, wood, recycled materials, collage, ceramics and murals, and many more. . Certified English and Spanish instructor in family welfare to help promote integral development.

  • 7. Folk Dance

    Class Description:

    This class is geared towards those with little to no experience in Folkloric dance, as well as those who would like to review the basics. Folkloric dance reflects the traditions, customs, legends, beliefs and lifestyles of people in particular countries and regions. Folkloric dance expresses the life and spirit of a people through its movement and music, and with a vitality and immediacy that instantly transport the viewer to the heart of that culture.

    Patricia Aceves

    Studied classical ballet in Guadalajara, Jalisco . At San Jose City College became involved in folk dance groups throughout the Bay Area: Soles de Mexico, Tierra Mestiza and Los Lupeños. . Participated in many events such as the Ethnic Festival in San Francisco.

  • 8. Ballet

    Class Description:

     In this class, children will explore the basics of creative dance (shape, form, musicality) combined with age-appropriate pre-ballet exercises. This class introduces children to the basics of ballet in a low-key and fun atmosphere.

    PhD in biomedical sciences in the field of Neurosciences . Degree in biology. Member of the folkloric Ballet of Puebla for 5 years. Member of a baton group known as the CENHCH for 3 years. Member of the ballet Nemesis for 4 years. Competed nationally and internationally.

  • 9. Tae Kwon Do

    Class Description:

    TaeKwonDo, a well-rounded martial art that originated in Korea, combines combat and self-defense techniques with sport and exercise. It is one of the most popular and widely practiced martial arts in the world today, and has been a part of the Olympic Games since 2000. Training in Taekwondo is an excellent tool for physical fitness and character development for children.

    Mater Ortiz

    A certified instructor by Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters) and WTF (World Taekwondo Federation). National referee of combat and forms in USA Taekwondo. Participated in two Pan American tournaments at the age of nine in Mexico City. In 2004 began to teach Taekwando in private schools in Redwood City and Mountain View. Degree in Philosophy.

    Class Description:

    This course is designed to build the oral English skills of non-native speakers of English. This is a beginning listening and speaking course and includes practice in group interaction, public speaking and listening comprehension. This class aims to help parents to be able to communicate with their bilingual children and with those around them.
